Tales of a Shopkeep 2

"what IS this?" Sita asked Maya, holding the book by its corners with the tips of her fingers.
"Hu?" Maya, who was by the front register, attempting to not clean the mess looked over to the far side of the room at the bookshelves where Sita was cataloging the reamaining books.
Sobokneferu had sold her shop to Maya in order to start a buddhist retreat center. Maya, who'd also owned her own business, had moved everything to yet another metaphysical shop she had purchesed, merging everything. At the moment, they were recording the stock and attempting to put order to this massive mess.
"THIS." Sita said wiggling the book at Maya. "why is THIS here. I utterly refuse to work here with this in the store... " she said in the utmost serious manner. "I didnt think you were that kind of person."
Maya, walked on over, looked at the 'Satanic Bibble' and shuddered as Sita knew she would. Maya was one of those 'practicioners' who followed the 'light'.
"Oh..." Maya sneared, mutating her pretty face whial the light played havok with her white blond hair. "toss it. I found the 'Necronomicon' yesterday.
"Its not still here is it?" Sita asked
"No... I let someone have it."
Sita rolled her eyes. "WHY?" she demanded, not quite loosing her humor.
Maya shrugged.
"you do know, that even if it isn't what we consider 'real' it isnt something to be taken lightly." Sita told her.
Maya straightened up..."Really?" She asked. "how so?"
"I have my theories. You never noticed that when people fiddle with this book they are eather on mass amounts of druggs or start using them, then their personality changes and they get paranoid and fucking crazy?" Sita asked.
Maya pondered this while Sita chunked the book in the trash bin, allong with three volumes of spell books.
"Hey... why are you throwing those away!?" Maya asked, shocked.
"Because she is all into those voodoo lovespells." She gave Maya a 'look'
"oooohhhhhhhhhhhh." Maya smiled and nodded. She didn't believe in 'dark' and 'left hand path.' One of the many reasons Sita was now working with her. In a pique of buddhaness, Sobekneferu, or what ever she was calling herself these days had given what she didnt 'need' to start her buddhist meditation center to other people, and as Sita had worked with her the longest, most of the 'shop' things had been given to her. Sita had then decided to merge her assets with Maya... the ultra positive new age reader who had made quite a name for herself in the 'alternitive' community.

Sita glared at the volumes she just threw away, they reminded her to much of things she'd rather not think about.

"So what do you think the Necronomicon is?" Maya asked. She had a tendancy to be a bit lazy, and even though she'd been in this building, the shop was messy and unorganised.
Sita went back to cagaloging.
She took a deep sigh, getting used to this overly bright shop was going to take some getting used to ..."have you ever read it?" she asked.
"NO !" Maya said a bit to defensively.
"If you look, you will see that all the metals and crystals that you are told to use for what ever woking is abosrbant in nature."
Maya's eyes grew wide.
"ah , you see part of my point. You see... I'm not saying I believe in all that b.s. or Lovecraft's version of things, but I do believe that there are interdementional beings that come through when you work w/this book, I call them the OTHERS. That's what I think the book is for."
"And these OTHERS...what do they want?" Maya asked looking incredably concerned.
Sita shruged. "I dunno.... domination I guess... I have met one that was ... creapy as fuck, but... he didnt really ... I cant describe him, but ... I don't know what they want, except out of thier demention."
Maya nodded... continued to ponder. Sita, found that she was remembering Freeman... she did on occasion... such an odd .... man. But then she couldnt really talk about The OTHERS and not think about him.
"So... do they just enter out plane or what?" she asked after Sita had recorded five books
"hmm ... they atempt to possess the practicioner, who then eather goes insane, is able to win or is taken over." Sita answered simply as Maya shuddered.
Sita worried about this. Did Maya always believe what people told them w/out examining the issue. She and Maya didn't know eacher in a personal manner, professionally yes. But it seemed to Sita that the subject matter was so out of the ordinary in this conversation that is seemed rather dangerous for people to just take others words for it... But then again, Sita had good credentials.
"Oh, I meant to ask you." Maya began as she seemingly arbitraraly pulled a book out of one of the six huge boxes of books on the floor. "Is this one any good?" She then handed Sita a very large looking tomb regarding shamenism. Sita put her clip bord down, read the back, looked through the table of contents, skipped to the bibliography and then skimmed a few pages.
Her ire at Maya's inactivity was mounting. Sita couldnt live in such a mess. She put the book on the self marked shaministic studdies, recorded it on the clip bord.
"Its purely acidemic and biased in that such way. Its about an outside studdying the culteral aspect and ramifications. It would put me to sleep."
Maya's face fell.... 'Ohh... It looked like it would be more than that when I ordered it. I was hopping it would be more detailed in the actuall practices."
"Not all tribes have the same ways. There are some general consistancies like totems and walking the shadow paths... but really there are as many myth sets and differant ways to practice it as their are cluteral influences. Like for example, my shamen didnt use psychotropic drugs or peyote... he said that the only true way for a shamen to reach the perception and walk the shadow paths was by the will to do so, and proper training and meditation techniques."
"what tribe was he?" Maya asked, she was very interested in Native American shamenism as she had native blood, some where in her background.
"I never thought to ask, I was a dumb kid. Hey... can you finish that herb display please? You know that I suck at that kind of thing, you know way more about that than I ever will."
Maya looked at her, slightly confused. "Didn't your shamen teach you?"
"ah didnt go much for healing.... jsut hmm pathworking." Sita felt likd swatting Maya on the head....
"oh.. that is so strange." She then went over to the herb display. Sita hadnt been lying or attempting to suck up to Maya, the woman knew her herbs and what to do with them.... It made much more sence for Maya to do something she was good at then to have her ponder about how she was going to deal with all the record keeping. From what Sita had noticed, Maya didnt even count the till down at the end of the day....

Sita hated paperwork..... She watched as gaggle of teen agers parked, got out of their car and headed toward the door. The bell over the door chimed. Sita let Maya handle this, she liked this sort of thing, and besides, one of the two of them had to do actual work. She was able to finishe two of the boxes before Maya interupted her.

Sita felt it before she turned. This kid was scared shitless.
"His house is haunted could you go purify it?" Maya asked as she left the gaggle in the 'meeting' room. It was a georgous sun room with colored glass, and intricately carved tables and soft chairs in the middle, in the center and corners there were huge pillows for one to sit on and allong the walls their were cushoned benches to sit on. This room was directly accross from where Sita and the books were.
"I told him what to do ... but he doesnt think he can." Maya shook her head w/impatience.
"Where does he live?" Sita demanded, she had the idea that Maya had not even discussed the fee.
"Alexandria." she cringed.
Ohhh. It had to be that place ! It had been a factory town and all maner of horrors had been enacted there.
"you did explain to him there there is a fee and why there is one?" Sita reminded her.
"Oh... I hate doing that..... we should help them."
"Im not saying we shouldn't Maya, however even in tribal cultures there was a gift or a payement to the shamen or the priest it would mess up that guy's karma not to do so. Now practically speaking... I dont currently have the money to purchase all the materials needed. and the shop as an entity can't for every one who comes in, we will then go bankrupt and not be able to further assist the comunity." sita sighed "we shoudl probably set up a charaty fund kind of thing, have an event at least once a month for people to come in and then we could stick that into a fund to do workings for people who can't afford them."
Maya looked at her. "Will you go?" she asked plaintively.
"certainly, but I am recording the prices of everything I'm using and Im serious about starting that fund ... why dont you think of some ideas whial finishing up those herbs?"
Maya's eyes glazed over as she lost herself in thought.

Ohhh this business venture was going to be interesting. If Maya hadn't been prominant and respected in the community, Sita woudl pull out all her assets rt now. But she had a good feeling about this... it would work.
"Maya, Im going to go talk to them and then get some things together. but Im finishing this box first, please talk to him about the fee.... he can pay it over time... but make sure to get that in writing."
"That sounds harsh." Maya said, her eyes returning to earth.
"life sucks." Sita smiled and shrugged.
