Thoth The Hermes of Egypt and why it anoyed me by page 1

First of all the title itself is irksom, it implies things .....

The association w/hermes ... I dont know when it started, nor do I care overly much, however, Thoth was first (whether this is chronologically true or not) I say this because Thoth and hermese were not likened to eachother till after the greeks were introduced to thoth

not to mention that thoth isnt even the egyptian name of said ntr

moving on to the preface page

"I he purpose of this essay is to indicate the chief ten
dencies of ancient Egyptian speculation in regard to the god
Thoth."

I do not like this sentance in the least. I dont think I have ever heard any one say something like yes, yes let us go to talk to some shivite and view thier speculations regarding Lord Shiva.... I hope that is all I need to make my point as to why the above sentance sucks.

I spose I should be amused at the diplomatic way the author says, yeah we know the greeks/ptolomeys and romans made shit up so any account by them should be viewed warily or as a fiction at best, but hey when it matches ancient egyptian text... it will be included. --- that I found funny.

ok so now we start ch 1
the name thoth
"The name of the god with whom this essay is concerned
occurs with considerable frequency in the texts of the Old
Kingdom."
and he goes on and on
and then he is kind enough to display all the various spellings.

I know Im rather geekey/nerdy
and I have these five books. One is an intro to and the basic study of mdu ntr (heiroglyphs) one is how to draw them out. Two more 'advancement' books, each w/dictionaries in the back of them and then I have another fat dictionary.

I also have budges works which always show the mdu ntr

I swear Im getting to the point

no matter how you look at it, squint your eyes and tilt your head to the side, the mdu ntr that this guy is providing... doesnt spell Thoth. Thoth is a greek name. One of the closer spellings rendered would be Djehuti.

However ... mr author never, in the three pages of him telling you how often and where the 'name' of 'thoth' appears does eve even mention that it doesnt spell thoth......

ooooooo he mentiones it once on page five after mentioning the greek spelling......
page 7 and Im lost, he is discussing place names and Im not sure why
page 8 he talks some smack about maspero
10 damn pages discussing the spelling of Djehuti....
oh this is gonna be boring
